Key Tax Filing and Payment Deadlines for Canadian Businesses

Self-Employed Individuals

  • Filing Deadline: June 15, 2024
  • Payment Deadline: April 30, 2024

If you or your spouse/common-law partner were self-employed in 2023, these are your key dates. Note that if a deadline falls on a weekend or public holiday, your return is considered on time if received or postmarked by the next business day.

For those with specific income types, installment payments are due on:

  • Farming and Fishing Income: December 31
  • Business, Professional, or Commission Income: March 15, June 15, September 15, December 15

More information on payment deadlines can be found here.

Corporations

  • Filing Deadline: Six months after the tax year end. Examples include:
    • Tax year ends March 31 → Filing due September 30
    • Tax year ends September 23 → Filing due March 23
    • Tax year ends November 30 → Filing due May 31

Corporations must pay income tax in monthly or quarterly installments if the total tax exceeds $3,000. Payment deadlines vary, with taxes generally due two months after the tax year end, or three months for Canadian Controlled Private Corporations (CCPCs).

For more on corporate tax payments and deadlines, see the Corporation Instalment Guide 2024.

GST/HST Filing and Payment

  • Monthly Filers: Due one month after the reporting period end. E.g., July 31 reporting period → August 31 filing and payment deadline.
  • Quarterly Filers: Due one month after the reporting period end. E.g., March 31 reporting period → April 30 filing and payment deadline.
  • Annual Filers (excluding self-employed individuals): Due three months after the fiscal year end. E.g., August 31 reporting period → November 30 filing and payment deadline.
  • Annual Filers (self-employed individuals with December 31 year end):
    • Filing Deadline: June 15
    • Payment Deadline: April 30

Annual filers with net tax over $3,000 must make quarterly installments. Example for a fiscal year ending December 31:

  • April 1 – June 30: Due July 31
  • July 1 – September 30: Due October 31
